Review of Michael W. Smith's new book

Three-time GRAMMY ® award winner and prestigious author Michael W. Smith has a brand new book coming out on Feb. 28

“A Simple Blessing; The Extraordinary Power of an Ordinary Prayer” (Zondervan).

In this new book, he takes a deeper look into the meaning of a “blessing” and how a simple prayer can change lives.

The book was inspired from an experience Smith had on his last tour when he sensed a rising level of alienation and disappointment among the attendees due to their personal trials and tribulations. Realizing he couldn’t ignore it, Smith began closing many of his concerts with a prayer of simple blessing over his audience.
The response has been overwhelming. The emails and letters of testimony are like nothing he has ever experienced in his 25 years of ministry. Far from being a 'magical' formula for extracting wealth and possessions from God, he has discovered that God's blessings are measured more by the flourishing of character in adversity than by the flourishing of stuff. The amazing result of God's true blessing is overflowing joy and peace. Unfortunately, many are robbed of the promise of blessing because they seek to be blessed more than to bless others. This beautiful work, written with writer Thomas Williams, will inspire readers to examine their hearts and learn to experience God's blessing as they seek to bless others, thus discovering the secret to drawing near to the heart of God.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!!  It has not only reminded me of the power of prayer but also the power of words.  Our words truly can build up or break down.

As many of us are praying for blogging friends going through very difficult trials, one comment he made completely resonated with me:

Is there any real value in praying for people you don't know, about problems you can't see, and about needs you can't meet?

As he has reflected on this question and the responses to his simple prayer over his audiences, he has been convinced that this kind of prayer does have significance.....I am convinced too.  I've seen it in my own prayer blog.

As many of you have asked me to pray for you or a loved one, I sometimes find myself at a loss for words during my prayer time.  I don't know your situation or even you...it's hard to know exactly what to pray.  Michael's book reminded me I don't have to know what to pray.  It doesn't have to be exact or eloquent.  God knows the situation and you know I am praying, that is enough.

His book also reminded me of the need to speak a blessing over my children and has given me an urgency to do just that.  I have a friend who's SIL each Christmas speaks an individual blessing over each of her family members at the table....I love that!!!  I truly believe we have forgotten the power of words and the power of prayer spoken out loud.

I love this quote from the book:

We are to bless others as Jesus did.  We don't originate the blessing; God originates it, and it resounds through us just as my music resounds through the piano in my living room.  Just as God's love resound through the life of Jesus.

Michael reminds us that when Jesus ascended to heaven, he took his body wit him.  Which means God no longer has a body on earth through which he can bless others -- except ours.

What a great read this book was!!  There is so much more in it that you just need to read for yourself.  It had me thinking deep into the night at times and has caused me to look for opportunities to not only bless my family through my words and prayers but others as well.  It has given me a renewed excitement about praying for those that I may not know personally, that I may not be able to physically help.....but I can pray.

I hope you will go out and pick up this book, it's wonderful.  But more importantly, I hope you will develop a desire in your heart to bless others through your words, actions and prayers.

Project 365 - Week 9

 Week 9.

Well, I am again rushing to get this posted.  I was sitting on the sofa with all my friends watching The Book of Eli and realized that I had not even started my P365 post!!!!  ack!!!  So, now we have put in a bit of a "lighter" movie....one I hope I can watch and post at the same time!!!

But first a question, if you saw that movie....do you think Eli was blind?

I missed two days this week.....TWO days.  Oh well, I really don't think anything happened that was very exciting those days anyway! ha!

Here's my week:
Sunday

Jared plays in the youth worship band at church.
I love seeing him up there!!

Monday
No picture.
I worked all day and then had tons of errands to do to get ready for my girls weekend away!

Tuesday
Again...no picture....sheesh.
I had so much to do today and then Jared woke up sick.
I am leaving tomorrow so I hope he gets well quickly!!!

Wednesday

I am here!!!
With all my friends!!
And when we walked in from the airport, my friend April had all this waiting for us....

 Plus about 4 other appetizers!!!!
My favorite!

Thursday
One thing about my group of friends......it's all about the food.

Today for lunch, Wendi made us the best french onion soup!!
Then we headed to the airport to pick up Kim and stopped for Thai on the way home.

Only 6 of our group made it this year.

Friday
my friends and I have been getting together for 17 years.  We used to always have a tea with scones, sandwiches..the works.  But we haven't done it in a few years.  Not sure why, but it just got dropped.  So this year, we decided to bring it back.  I am so glad we did.

Robin, this is your biscotti recipe!!!

Then for dinner....I can't believe we were even hungry....we made a caprese salad and a bay scallop risotto.  When I get home, I will post the risotto recipe on my recipe blog...you will want this recipe!

Saturday
Today is movie day and left overs!!
We have spent the whole day watching movies, reading, eating....we did do Zumba this morning!!

This has been such a relaxing weekend!!!
And I still have 1 1/2 days!! whoop!
I had one rough bump, while I am having fun, Jared is at home STILL sick....feeling like a pretty bad mom today...ugh.

Heading out for some refreshment!!

Over the years, God has blessed me with amazing friends.
In each church and city he has taken us to, He has provided me with great friendships.
I have been so blessed!!

However, I have one group of friends that have been with me for 20+ years.  I met them in the first church my husband and I pastor'd in.  All of them were military wives and therefore, over the years, we have been spread out all over the US and the world.

This has not stopped or hindered our friendships.
In fact, we have met together for a girl's weekend the same week in Feb for about 17 years.  These ladies are amazing, godly women.  They all love the Lord with all their hearts.  They encourage me in my faith and marriage, hold me up in prayer, cry with me when I am hurting and know more about me than anyone else other than my husband.

I love these ladies so much!
If you remember back in November, 5 of these 8 friends came to surprise me for my 50th birthday!!!

These are friends that have my back...spiritually and physically.

Well, it's that time again!!!
Our weekend to stay in our PJs, eat, talk till wee hours, watch movies, eat and hang out.

We will also spend time praying for each other....the best!

So, my blog will be a bit quiet over the next few days.
But I am looking forward to relaxing, laughing and refreshing!
It seems this weekend always comes at a good time!!

See you next week!

Actions speak louder than words...

We all know that old saying or any of these….

It’s not what you say but what you do that counts….
Do what I say, not what I do…

I am currently involved in the bible study, Deeper Still, written by Kay Arthur, Priscilla Shirer and Beth Moore.

….and it is challenging me.

Challenging me to examine what my actions say about what I believe about God and whether I trust that He can truly do what He says He can do.

I know in my head that God can do all He says He can do.
I know in my head that I worship a God that is able to do more than I could ever imagine.
I have studied God's word enough to know His promises AND that He always keeps His promises.

And yet, when trouble creeps in or a storm blows through my life, my actions don't always follow along with what I know.

If I truly believed God can do all He says He can do then...

...I wouldn't try to handle it on my own.
...I wouldn't be overwhelmed with fear.
...I wouldn't doubt His power is available to ME.

If I truly believed God is able to do more than I could imagine then...

..I would recognize the connection between my reality and His ability.
...I would pray about things until it was finished.
...I would pray knowing that He had already heard and answered.
...I would be watching for God to supply my need.

My study has been teaching me that we tend to file away what we are learning about God and what He has done in our lives in a box.  No problem with that.  However, the problem comes when we put a lid on it and then expect God to only be able to work in the confines of what we know in our box.

I love this quote...Our God is predictable in His character, but He is unpredictable in His activity!!

Pricilla Shirer writes:

Do you have a spiritual box with a closed lid that has been limiting your view of God's movement in your life?  If you've stopped praying about something particular because you really don't think He'll do anything substantial, then you can be sure your lid is airtight.  Whether God moves is a question of His sovereignty, not His ability.  What He does his His business.  Believing that He can is our business.

I think my actions and prayer life are about to change!

Project 365 - Week 8

 Week 8.

Whew!  I'm late!!!  We went to parent weekend at my son's college this weekend and got back LATE last night.  Oh my goodness did it feel good to hug my son!!!!  Although it almost wasn't worth the drive because he was in the talent show and had rehearsals most of the time.......but I said ALMOST!!!  :)

This has been a busy week for me.....full of highs and lows.  I am so thankful for all of you and for praying for my son and his all-state tryout.  One of the things I love most about blogging is the encouragement and prayer support we can give each other!!!  What a blessing!

Here's my week:
Sunday
In Sunday school today we talked about how God never gives up on us and how it made each of us unique.  The younger kids made art using their thumb prints and saw how each was unique!!

We enjoyed the evening listening to the LR youth symphony.
Jared is in the very back.....1st chair french horn

Monday
Valentines that my daughter sent to me and her dad!
spent the day at all-state band try outs.
Jared did well, but did not make it this year.  :(
Came home this evening to this AMAZING cake my husband had waiting for me!!!  So, so good!!!
And then the evening was topped off by my son posting a video on FB singing to me for valentines day!!!
I am very blessed!!!

Tuesday
ared had a mid-winter concert at school tonight
It was great!

Wednesday
a favorite pasta dish of ours...one I learned in Italy.
Go here for the recipe.

Thursday
Jared had to work tonight, so Steve and I went out on a date and enjoyed some sushi!!  I am so glad he loves sushi as much as I do!!

Friday
Got to JBU after lunch for parent weekend.  So, so good to see my son!!!
And we also were able to meet his new girlfriend and take them to dinner.  Loved that!

Saturday
Siloam Springs is pretty small. So today we headed 30 minutes away for lunch to eat at Steak N Shake....a family favorite!!  No, that is not my shake on this side of the table...that is Andrea's!!

They had a talent show for parent weekend.
Jason and 4 of his friends did an AWESOME job....if I do say so myself!!!
Lots of talent at this school...it was very fun!

Well, another week down!!!  Link up and show us how yours went!

disappointed but so proud

As many of you know, my son had all-state tryouts yesterday.

Typically, they are held at a college campus seeing has over 1000 kids come from all over the state to tryout.

However, our "snowmageddon" caused lots of problems and it was moved THREE times over the last couple of weeks.  It ended up at a high school in Conway, 30 minutes from here.  Not the greatest situation, as the school was in session so most tryouts couldn't start until the classrooms were open.

They had the kids arrive at NOON and crammed them all in the auditorium and then made them stay in there till school was out....ugh!!  You can only imagine what it was like in there...1000s of teenagers stuck in one place for over 3 hours.... all running on adrenaline and nerves!!!!

They did hand out time cards early on and Jared's time was 5:54.....
....that meant 5+ hours of waiting.

Because of the limited space, the kids were only given the 30 minutes before their tryout time to rehearse....that is not much time.  Finally around 3:30, they let kids out of the auditorium to go to the cafeteria or hang outside...the weather was beautiful!!!  Some kids tried to practice but were stopped by adults sighting that they could be heard in the buildings where tryouts were going on.

Needless to say, they were not the most favorable conditions. However, those in charge really did a good job with what they had to work with....I certainly would not have wanted to be in charge of that!!!

Fifteen minutes before his time slot, we headed to the tryout room.  Jared soon found out that he was immediately following the number one horn in the state.....slightly intimidating.

I have to say, my son handled his nerves so well!
He never got grouchy or on edge....like his mother would have!
And even helped others out while waiting his turn.

Sadly, he didn't make it.
He was 14 points off.....totals are over 1000 so he was very close.
When he found out, his comment was....
"well, I didn't make it.  that's ok.  Time to start getting ready for next year"

I am so proud of him!

The review that will surprise you!

I was very excited when CSN.com asked me to do another review for them.
What an amazing company this is!!
I have not only received quality products from them, but their customer service is top notch!!

You can only imagine where my mind went as I thought about what to review.....
...the kitchen of course...right?!!!

Wrong!

This time I decided to review something totally different....

We have never had a cordless drill and I thought I would get my husband in on the fun!

I think he was happy!!!

It came in a great case that houses everything!

Now on to a project I have been wanting to do for FOUR years....my laundry room.  It is so narrow and I am constantly tripping over everything that is on the floor.  I need some place to hang things.
Enter the cordless drill.....

I love that it has a reverse button...so you can unscrew your mistakes...not that I would have any of those!

It also has a place to hold the different bits on the drill so you don't have to be running back to where ever you put the case!

No, I don't have 3 hands...that is my husband showing me how to put the drill bit in...very easy!

Here you have to choose if your are using screws or what...
I know my husband told me what the "or what" was, but as I type this, I can't remember!  Hmmmm, well just know you have an "or what" choice!!
Can you tell I am not very handy?

 Yes, that is ME.
I did have to use the drill to do the review and I was surprised how great it was!!!
You do have to put a little muscle into it though and by the end my arms were tired!
...I did tell you that I am not handy, right?

 The end result!!!
I now have a place to hang all the stuff in my laundry room.  So every thing is up off the floor and off the window sill!!!
 How great does that look?
Why did it take me FOUR years to do this?!!!
I love it and it was up in no time because of the cordless drill.

Now Steve is off to put up some shelves in the garage....he has wanted to do that for four years too!

Head on over the CSN and check out all they have to offer!!
This drill was awesome and very reasonably priced!!!
Perfect!

Project 365 - Week 7

 Week 7.

My week is pretty much all about snow.  Snowmageddon happened in AR and it completely took over our lives, effectively shutting them down!!

Today was in the 60s and sunny.....ridiculous.  But I will not complain about the sun!!!

Another earth shattering event......I am not posting ONE picture of food.  I know right?!!  I did however cook......yummy vegetable beef soup, the most delicious bay scallop risotto and chicken and orzo soup to name a few.....sadly, just no pictures.

If you don't mind, I would love to ask you to pray for my son Jared tomorrow, Monday, afternoon.  All-state tryouts were moved till then due weather....3rd times a charm, right?  Thanks so much!!

Well, here's my week:
 Sunday
We went to a super bowl party at a friends house and I made a new friend!  Is she not the cutest thing?!

Monday

We woke up to 3 inches of very wet snow this morning.
 Tuesday

From looking out my front porch today, you would never know that we got 3" of snow yesterday or that they are predicting we are going to get 8-10" tomorrow
Wednesday

It snowed all day today.
We got about 6 inches....crazy!!

 Thursday

This was my view today.
I woke up not feeling well at all and promptly went back to bed.

Friday
Every school was closed today but ours...go figure. We had a late start.  So after seeing that Jared was on his way to school (driving himself), Steve and I left for our usual Friday breakfast date.  This is what we found on the roads...

 Solid ice!
I could not believe we send Jared out on this!!!!  And I was worried sick until we heard from him.  He made it fine but said it was pretty bad....ugh.  However, it was all melted by the time he came home!

This is about the best snowman you will ever see in AR!!  at my neighbors!

Saturday
My blurb book came!!!!
And I LOVE it!

Do you know what this is?
Come back Monday for a review I am doing to find out!
Hope you had a great week.  If the national weather was right, then most of you will have pictures like mine!!!  link up and let's see!

I HAVE paid my dues!

I realized yesterday that most of you who visit my blog, have only known me since I moved South.  And as I whine and complain about all the snow we are having, you don't realize that I DO know what real snow fall is like...my friend, Wendee, reminded me of that (by the way, Wendee you need to send me a way to contact you!!!)

So, I went back in my photo albums and pulled out some proof......

The very first church God led us to was in Minot, North Dakota.  This Arizona girl had never been north of Kansas.  When my son, Jason, was born, we were snowed in for a week.  They induced me early so I would have him before the storm.....one poor woman had to go to the hospital on a snow mobile later in the week!  this picture is of the neighbor kids climbing onto the roof of the school across the street just by walking up the snow!!!

The day that Jared was born, 2 years later, it was 92 BELOW zero.  Yes!  Below zero.  The raw temp was about 60 below and they wouldn't let me take him home from the hospital until it was 30 below.

 wasn't he cute?!!
During the winter, we would let our children go out to play if it was 1 degree above zero!!!

This same year that Jared was born, we had so much snow, our best friends had to hire a snow plow to get them out of their house.  They lived on 5 acres just outside of town.  This picture is of the wall around their house created by the snow plow....we called it "Fort Smith"!!!

This wall went all the way around on both sides!!
And we had our very own sledding hill!!!

God next moved us back down to Texas where we had just enough time to warm our blood before he moved us to Indiana.  The first week we were there, it snowed 18 straight days and dropped 4 feet of snow!!!
My kids loved it since they really didn't remember ND that well!!
And in IN, they don't close school for a few feet of snow!!!

And they didn't run out of meat in their supermarkets either!!!  :)

So, you see I have paid my dues.  And I was SO happy when God moved us back to the south and I knew I would not have to endure any more winters like that.....or so I thought!!!

By the way, Sara, the best part about being 50 and having grown kids is that I don't have to go out in the snow any more......hence no snow angel!!!  :)
