sometimes you just have to laugh......

Laughter is good medicine.  And when you are as stressed as we have been, the oddest things become funny.....have you ever noticed that?

So that is my disclaimer.....if you don't find this funny, then blame it on the stress!!!

First a little background.  My dad is a 3rd generation doctor.  The trend stopped with me!  I can not handle the sight of blood or any kind of gore.  I don't watch any movies with blood/gore and when something comes on the TV, I close my eyes!!  God graciously protected me as my kids very rarely had a bloody accident, no stitches or broken bones.....of course now that I said this, they will!!!  Anyway, you get the idea.  There is a reason I am not in the health care industry.

Along with my Aunt, I also have a great uncle here in Dallas that is 103 years old.  While we were here, my dad and I went over to check on him several times.  My uncle had skin cancer many years ago on his nose and they had to eventually remove his nose.  So, he has a prothesis he wears.  It really is amazing, you would not even know if someone didn't tell you.

Well 2 days ago, my dad had to have the caregiver take him out of the room to find something and they left me alone with my uncle, but he was sleeping and they assured me he would not wake up.  I was sitting enjoying some quiet time when all of a sudden I heard him get up.  I was concerned he might fall so I ran into his room and spent the next few minutes yelling my name to him until he figured out who I was.  He promptly headed into the bathroom and I thought "Lord, surely I don't have to help him with this? I am not prepared for this!"  Fortunately, he was able to take care of himself but as he leaned over to flush the toilet, his nose (the prosthesis) flew up in the air only attached at the very top!!!

At that moment I was cured of any desire to ever lay out in the sun again.  I was NOT prepared to see this!!

He then moved to the sink (I stood at the door incase he needed help) and started vigorously brushing his teeth.  As he did, he nose wobbled side to side on his face............I kid you not!

I am at this point fevorishly dialing my dad's cell number to find out where the heck he is because I am now sure that his nose is about to fall off.........and what do I do then?  Pick it up and say "whoops, you dropped your nose!?"

He finally finishes and walks out to the room and asks me to help him get his shoes on.  So here I am, kneeling on the floor, fumbling with a shoe horn, trying not to look up because the view is.....well, something I am going to have nightmares about for a while!!!

My poor uncle looks at me when I am done and says "Sara, that was harsh!  you are not good at putting shoes on!!"  No, you are right uncle, I am not good at putting shoes on someone whose nose is about to fall off on top of me!!!

My dad walks in about this time, sees my uncle, sees his nose, sees my face, walks outside and bursts out laughing!!!!  At that moment, I was not laughing and wanted to kill my dad, but seriously we have laughed till we cried over this ever since.

The moral of this story is

.....you can find humor in almost any situation in life and also.......

..........quit laying out in the sun because your nose WILL fall off!!!!

Oh that is rich! Of course, as a nurse, I would have loved to be a fly on the wall!

Reinds me of a w/c basketball game I saw at the hospital where I worked years ago. I won't go into what happened, but my poor office manager was pretty traumatized.

Oh, and I guess that also might be something you remember if you're ever tempted to "stick your nose in where it doesn't belong"?!

Wow! That is very funny! Some of my most tresured memories are when God has brought laughter in the mist of tragety. It is just like Him steping and saying, "I am still here, and I am still good."

I've been reading your posts and praising God for His answer to all the prayers. I will continue to lift your aunt up.
And your uncle's nose story cracked me up! Thanks for the laugh. I'll try to remember it when I'm laying out in the sun in about...hmm...7 months!!

I'm with you waaay too much. I could laugh as long as I didn't let myself actually picture what you saw. I get dizzy way too easy.

It's funny to me that our son is an EMT getting his paramedic traingin and I can't even listen to what he thinks are cool stories.

Laughter is indeed good medicine! (Smiling's my favorite!)

PS The book would be great for your mom.
