It's not a tumor....

You need to read that title in your best Arnold Schwarzenegger voice!!!

And it's ok to laugh at yourself as you do, because you're going to be laughing at me fairly quickly!!

About 2 1/2 weeks ago I started smelling a peculiar smell all around me.  It's hard to explain, but the best I can do is tell you that it was a cross between a skunk and coffee.

weird, I know.

I smelled it in my house, then started smelling it in my car, then out in stores and restaurants.  I didn't smell it all the time or every day, but often enough that I thought maybe I smelled like a skunk.

I started watching people around me to see if they reacted to the smell....nope.
I asked people if they happen to smell a skunk....nope.
I asked my family if they smelled something bad in the house....nope.

NO ONE else smelled the smell.

And it was driving.me.crazy!!!

I finally decided to google it......probably not my wisest choice.

The first thing I found said that I could possibly have a tumor....
....in the area of my brain that controlled the sense of smell.

any guesses where my mind went from there?
Let's just say there were nails and coffins involved.

So, I emailed a friend who is a doctor and asked her opinion and if I needed to be seen or not.  What I was really asking was....do I need an MRI and how soon can I get one?!!

The next evening, still waiting for a response and of course evaluating myself for other symptoms,  my husband walks in the room and says "so you won't think you are crazy...  (I don't think I am CRAZY, I think I have a TUMOR!!! )... I was just in the closet and got the faint smell of a skunk"

Really?!!!  So I ran to the closet and started searching for something that could have died in there (if you knew me, you would know that is not beyond the realm of possibility) or thinking maybe a skunk died under the house...when I pick up my new TOMS I just bought 2 1/2 weeks ago.......

....and they smell just like a SKUNK!!!

I am not joking...the soles inside the shoes smell like a skunk.  My new shoes......and I have been wearing them all over....hence the reason I smelt it in all different places!!!!!

Oh.my.word.

It's not a TUMOR!!!!

:)

Oh Sara, you make me LAUGH. And googling symptoms - that is of the devil - in the past year I have diagnosed myself with not only a brain tumor and mold poisoning but also MS. Turns out it was nothing my chiropractor couldn't cure, but boy, the mind sure does go crazy, doesn't it?? So funny!

That sounds like something I would do!!! Except I'd be on WebMD & be in a fit of fear for weeks!!!

Thank goodness your husband found the 'skunk' & no MRI was needed :)

(I got a great chuckle on this)

I bought Frank some driving mocs and had the same thing happen. I walked in my house after it had been shut up for a few days and gagged. It turned out to be the soles of the shoes. I am glad to hear this has happened to someone else.

We are built from the same cloth, Linda...I'd be googling too! (I call it health porn...it can get that destructive!). So glad it's laughable and funny in the end...though I hope you found a way to get the smell out!

Loved that one liner and we are all happy that you do not have a tumor!

It is just amazing to me how quickly our internal dialog can run ahead of our reality and suddenly we are nailing shut our coffins....been there and done than more time than I can count!

You are in good company.

AND I think sometime that my sense of smell is more highly developed than everyone else in my family. My favorite sentence for the last several years has been "What's that smell?" I think the diminishing hormones may give way to a heightened sense of smell!

Too funny!

Made me laugh! My daughter said a week or so ago that her TOMS were stinking too. I think she washed them all at the same time. Too funny Sara!

Too funny.
I had an obsessive fear a few nights ago that kept me awake.

My TOMS smell like skunk too! And I even have people commenting on it in public! Did you ever get rid of the smell?

Kevin, it was apparently a "batch" of TOMs. the glue or something. One store here told me they sent one whole shipment back. i took them back to where I bought them and they exchanged them for me...I made sure the new ones didn't smell!
