Flashback Friday

Today I am joining Linda from Mocha with Linda for the debut of her new meme, Flashback Friday. She says:

Welcome to the debut week of Flashback Friday! This new meme's purpose is to have us take a look back and share about a specific time or event in our lives. It will be fun to see how similar - or different - our experiences have been! Here's how it will work: Each Thursday I will post a prompt which will give you the subject for that week's flashback. Post your flashback on Friday, and come back here to link up.

Her first prompt is: How and when did you learn to drive? Do you have any particular memories associated with getting your driver license? How old were you when you got your first car and what was it? Who paid for it?

I learned to drive when I was 15 and my brother and mom did most of the training. I have 2 specific memories of learning to drive. The first happened with my brother. He drove a truck that was a stick shift and I was driving him to Circle K. I had to make a left turn across 3 lanes of traffic and as I took off, I stalled it. I proceeded to stall it (in the middle of the 3 lanes) FIVE more times. Traffic was backing up and people were yelling out their windows. My brother was being very supportive and was yelling back and I was crying. I finally got the truck across the traffic and in to the Circle K. when I stopped the car, I looked at my brother and said "I will NEVER drive this truck again!" He very calmly looked at me and said "then I guess you are walking home" .....yep, I drove it home and it was the best thing he could have done for me!!

My 2nd memory is of driving with my mom. She had a car that had the horn inside the steering wheel....so all you had to do was squeeze the wheel and you would honk the horn. I was pretty new to driving and was coming home. You had to basically make a U-turn to pull into our garage. I was sooooo nervous and 1/2 way into the garage, in my nervousness, I must have squeezed the wheel a bit too hard.......the horn went off and in a matter of a second I looked at my mom and said "what was that?!" AS I proceeded to step on the gas instead of the brake. I hit the brick wall at full speed.........there is still a bumper print in that wall......I don't think they made another car with the horn in the steering wheel!

I got my first car at 16. My dad got a new car and so I got his hand-me-down......a 1969 mustang fast back. It was puke yellow and my dad had it painted my favorite color, blue. Can you say spoiled? My older brother sure could!

Hop over to Linda's and read everyone else's Flashback....better yet, JOIN IN!!!

Wow. You definitely had some exciting experiences! How long did your dad make you drive the mustang (to be sure you wouldn't wreck it) before he got it painted?!

When my brother was an early driver (I would have been 5), he had trouble with starts - the car would "buck". I was in the back seat and loved it. I would say "Do it again! Do it again!"

What a spoiled girl you where with that Mustang! That horn would have scared me too!

I have very fond memories of driving around in your Mustang. Your car was much cooler than Cecilia's pinto or my Datsun B210. And yes ladies, I would say she was spoiled, but look how good she turned out.

I can so see me doing that with the horn! And I am glad we didn't have a garage or I probably would have dented it, too. I bumped the mailbox the first time I turned the pick up into our driveway.

I always wanted a mustang and would beg to drive my friends. Great story!

ha! my cousin hit the garage!
she was mortified. they had to get the carpenter to fix it... she cried for days and she didn't drive again for weeks.

The part about the horn cracks me up! Oh, your father was sweet to have your car painted.

I grew up with 3 older brothers and one younger and I'm sure they would say I am spoiled also.

You have a wise brother!

My first driving experience involved running into something, too, so I can empathize!

Fun stories and it sounds like your brother was both patient & wise beyond his years.

Great "hand-me-down" car to get - a Mustang!

Blue mustang! How cool is that?!

It's the mishaps in life that make the best stories :-)

So funny! Do you still have the Mustang??

You did good, Sara. Dads tend to spoil their daughters a whole lot. I am finding our we spoil our granddaughters a lot too.

A lot of our cars have been hand-me-downs like yours. Mine wasn't but I have had a few later myself. It helps the pocketbook just a lot!
