I grew up in a house full of antiques.
My mom loved them.
Today you might have called her an antique junkie..
.....but she is one of the most knowledgeable people I know on them.
We spent a lot of time as kids hanging out in antique stores my mom would spot and if she came home with something, you knew it was a treasure.
One of the things she started collecting was pewter ice cream molds.
I don't really remember a time with out them.

I can't even tell you how many she has...
...but on our birthday, we got to pick the molds we wanted our ice cream in.
she had one for every holiday.
and Easter always held ice cream eggs!!!
After I got married, she started giving me some.
one at a time for special occasions.
And each one holds a special memory for me.
My mom used to always mold this heart in strawberry ice cream.
my kids also grew up with their ice cream molded on birthdays!
but the other great use for it is molding butter for special occasions.
I have a turkey for Thanksgiving and a Santa for Christmas
(which no one likes to be the first to cut into!!
Funny they don't have a problem with the turkey!)
Here's how it works:
Soften your butter to room temperature.
Fill both sides of the mold with the butter.
then squish the sides together .
It makes a dinner party just that much more special!!!
And now you understand the look below....
when Alyssa received her first ice cream mold for Christmas

Those are awesome - I could not figure out how you did that butter for the kids.
I have antiques all over our home. Will have to see next time we look for treasures on vacation if I can find one.
That is so cool!
This is an antique with which I was not familiar! I love the treasures that I've received from my G'ma and my Mom, though. These molds are so sweet. I love it that you are passing them along to your own children.

I've never seen those. And my mom's kitchen was an antique store. Not that she bought antiques; she just kept things forever and they eventually became antiques!
How neat!!
Very cool. I was wondering how you made that tulip. I love her expression. What a cool gift Idea and a wonderful tradition. Which mold did she get?
Yes, that makes your daughter's reaction make more sense. Sweet tradition.
I think I'm going to look for the plastic variety for a party we are having Sunday.
How awesome!! Love the molds. Want to make me a cake, lol? ;)
Havne't seen the butter molds. My family did lamb cakes for Easter.

I LOVE these! I'm on a mission now!
That is so cool! The expression on Alyssa's face shows that she has been moved by such tradition as well. I had never even heard of ice cream molds before. But I guarantee you that I will be on the lookout for them now and will know what they are when I see them because of this post. Thank you!
those are soo cool... i have never seen anything like that before.... i am going to keep my eyes open for them ... maybe I will get lucky one day and find one or two...
You should have told everyone you hand carved them with a knife. lol
Also, wondering which mold Larry chose on his birthday. The tulip or the heart? :)
Looks great!
What a very special tradition!! I think that is so very neat. I assume that the ice cream works the same way. Just squish it in and refreeze.
Great post
Amy
I LOVE these!
And I love that last picture, hysterical!
Not sure what I like more...the traditions that hold such sweet memories, or the gorgeous tulip that mold made! :)
Sara: I remember these so well. My Mom had them too. I remember she would send them to the Baskin Robbins on Speedway at Christmas to be filled. Ice Cream was always so much fun when they were in a shape. Margaret
Coolest things ever! And now we totally get the "look". lol
Ah-ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I was picturing you carving frozen butter fast and furious with a little sharp knife! Ha!)
Those are so totally cool. And what a special thing that they are family tradition, too. I love this!!
My husband is going to hate that NOW I'm going to have to pull over and check out the antique stores we pass.
