Top 5 favorite Christmas traditions - #4 & #3

I have to tell you again that it was so hard to narrow down my traditions to 5. Even today, I have been rearranging the list!!! If I gave you all of them, it would take a few weeks I think!

Decorating the tree is the first tradition to start off the season! After that, out comes the Christmas dishes (that we eat off of for the whole month) and all the house decorations......you'll be seeing those during I see what you're saying, Christmas edition!

Favorite Christmas Tradition #4, the Bowyer Dance actually happens Christmas morning!! My kids usually sleep together in the same room (even now as young adults and teenagers!). Christmas morning they wake up bright and early and rush in our room and jump all over us to get us up (even now as young adults and teenagers!!!! If you can believe it!). Once Steve and I are up, the kids have to stay in our room until we get everything set up.......in other words, the coffee made!......and ready.

Then they line up, the order varies each year, and do the Bowyer Dance out the room, down the hall and to the living room where the gifts are waiting!! Everyone HAS to dance!!! I really tried to get a video of this for you to see, but my old camera would not upload!!! This is a very silly tradition and I am not sure how it started, but it has stuck and we LOVE it!!

Last year, we weren't sure Alyssa (being the college student and all) would want to do the dance and we were prepared to have her bow out. She acted a bit grumpy and mad that the boys wanted her to do it and I was really sad. But come to find out it was all an act and as she danced by her dad she pulled out a can of silly string and covered him in it!!!!! I taught that girl right!!!!

Favorite Christmas Tradition #3, Matching Xmas PJs. Remember my comment on yesterday's post about not starting a tradition you didn't want or couldn't do forever?! This is one of those!!!

I started making Xmas PJs for the kids when Alyssa was 3 and Jason was 1. The kids get their PJs on Christmas Eve. One year, when the kids were teens/preteens, it was crazy busy! I just did not have time to sew the PJs, so I went out and bought matching ones, really cute matching ones, really cute matching ones that cost less than making them!!!!

When the kids opened them, they knew immediately that they were bought and you would have thought I had given them each a lump of coal! They couldn't believe that I would have the audacity to go out and buy PJs.....how could I?! Seriously, I got so much grief I almost sewed them some that night....almost. I had no idea that it was so important to them.....matching wasn't the big deal.....mom making them was the big deal. I have sewed them ever since, not always happily. But once I see them in the PJs and enjoying them so much, I am so glad I did. They wear them all year long!

The horrible, terrible, bought PJs!

One thing I have learned about family traditions is that if you start them young they just become part of who your family is. I don't think you could get a teenager to start and go along with some of these!

Tomorrow a Christmas Tradition for just me and Steve!!

Can you adopt me? :)

What a fun family you have!! We have lots of traditions, too...but no dances or silly string. Maybe an idea for this year.

Hugs,

Ohilda

Thank you SO much for sharing your traditions with us...I am loving this! I love it that the kids wanted the homemade pajamas (even though I'm sure you weren't loving it right then and there!)...just shows how into the tradition they are! You are such a good mom.

Oh Lady! We are SO into our traditions! I used to wake up at not even the crack of dawn, as a child at wait by my stocking. Just wait, mom new I was up and she would get up soon if I was quiet...if I made noise though or begged them to get up it was longer. We had matching pjs too. Store bought. I get my kiddos pjs too. I don't think I could possibly make them! Oh the stress. I totally hear you with the buying is cheaper then making! WHY WHY it that? It drives me crazy...
Dancing that is SO cool. I love that she got her Dad and not you! Too funny. These are so enjoyable to read and learn about you and I want to be adopted too.

Oh Sara that is so sweet! I LOVE the dance story. Sometimes those college kids really pull through in the emotions department. Thank goodness.
