Family Game Night - New Game

If your family is like ours, then you love any kind of board game!!!  Our family nights usually center around some kind of game and I think we probably have every one ever made!!  However, there were several criteria a game had to have to become a family favorite.

1.  had to be fun
2.  everyone had to be able to play, no matter the age
3.  had to be faced paced, we have a few members that lose interest quickly
4.  everyone had to have equal ability to win, no one likes losing all the time!

Over the years, it has been hard to find games that met all those criteria, especially when there are 5 years between oldest and youngest kid.  However, some have risen to the top.  Our favorites over the years have been:

dominos, can be played at any age if you have colored ones
Life
Uno
The Pizza game
Kerplunk
Monopoly - this is only favorite to everyone but me.  If my husband and I play together, it gets ugly.  We are just slightly competitive! plus it's too slow for me!

We have many others, but those are the ones that come to mind.  Yesterday, Jason and I went to Barnes and Nobles to find a book.  We were planning on having game night when we got home and playing Life.  However, right by the check out a new game caught our attention.  Dice-capades.  We both agreed that it looked like it could meet all our criteria, so we bought it.

I honestly wish my camera battery had not been dead......you would have seen some very entertaining pictures!  Like Jared having to stand on one foot while he got 5 dice (or is it die?) stacked on his hand.  Or Steve having to do the number of situps on his dice and the dog trying to lick his face while he did them.  This is a great family game!!!  Probably best for families with preteen kids and up.  It requires some math skills at times.  My only negative was that the trivia section was HARD.  My trivia minded husband blew through this section, but I got STUCK there and eventually needed "help" out...which means giving me the easiest question on the card and not timing my answer!

So, if you are looking for a new game this season to play with your family, try this one out.  It got a thumbs up from all of us!!

I love the criteria list. We're going to use that too. Did you guys ever play Wacky 6 with us? That is our all time favorite game. And everyone we play it with, loves it.

Yesterday we went to good will to find some craft things and my son saw a board game he wanted. He asked my wife if he could get it and she said yes. I had played it before and knew it was a very hard game to play. When we got home he and my wife tried to play it and It was over both of their heads. She asked why I let them buy it knowing how hard it was to play and I told her she didn't ask me. :)

Sara, I've been enjoying your last few posts, though I've been unable to comment. Thanks for sharing your Christmas traditions. I especially loved your letter writing idea. I wonder if it's too late to start that one for us...

And thanks for these game ideas! They're great! Can you believe we don't have any dominoes? It's been on my wish list for years!

And one more thing: your comment Friday on my blog...Marrying young worked for us, yes. But it's not the right thing for everyone. One important thing to note: our parents were completely on board. Not to say they weren't concerned in the beginning, but they talked with us together and individually and in the end they knew it was the right thing for us too. There was no doubt in anyone's heart or mind. (except for an out-of-town aunt who questioned me in my dressing room ON my wedding day!!) If there is doubt in your and Steve's hearts - pray, pray, pray). If it's what God wants for your children I think he'll give you His peace and joy.
Hope that helps a tiny bit....
If you want to talk more about it, feel free to email me.

Perfect timing for this recommendation. We love games too. Catch Phrase is a terrific one for when you have a larger family gathering. You really need at least 6 people for it to be fun but it's a riot. I'm going to google The Pizza Game. Never heard of it. Happy times!
